Where to play golf in the Algarve

Nearly all of the Algarve's golf lies between the south coast and the hills just inland, and it falls into three areas. Which one suits you depends on how far you are willing to drive from Faro Airport, how many courses you want within easy reach, and whether you would rather stay in a busy resort or a quiet town. Many golfers choose one base and play the clubs around it, so picking the area first makes the rest of the trip easier to plan.

Western Algarve

Western Algarve runs from Portimão and Lagos out to Vila do Bispo, with the hills of Monchique and Aljezur behind. The coast turns into Atlantic cliffs and quieter towns, and the courses are set among cork oak and pine. It is the furthest area from Faro Airport, so golfers usually stay in Lagos, Alvor or Portimão and play the clubs nearby.

Best for: golfers who want a quieter base, cliff-top scenery and beaches between rounds, and don't mind a longer transfer.

Central Algarve

Central Algarve stretches from Lagoa and Silves through Albufeira to Loulé, Faro and São Brás de Alportel. It includes Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, some of the best-known golf resorts in the region. It has the highest concentration of courses, the most hotels built around golf and the shortest drives from Faro Airport.

Best for: first visits, groups and short breaks, when you want a different course each day without long drives in between.

  • 16 published golf clubs
  • Estimated road distance from Faro Airport: 6–62 km

Clubs in: Lagoa, Silves, Albufeira, Loulé

Eastern Algarve

Eastern Algarve covers Olhão, Tavira, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António, up to the Guadiana river and the Spanish border, with rural Alcoutim inland. The towns are more traditional, there are fewer courses and the pace is quieter. Seville Airport is a practical alternative to Faro for this end of the region.

Best for: golfers who prefer uncrowded courses and traditional towns, or who are flying into Seville.

  • 5 published golf clubs
  • Estimated road distance from Faro Airport: 46–68 km

Clubs in: Tavira, Castro Marim, Vila Real de Santo António
