Airports

How to Get to the Algarve

Three airports serve Algarve golf trips, each useful for a different starting point and a different part of the region.

FAOPrimary gateway

Flying to Faro

Faro Airport (FAO) is the Algarve's own airport and the primary way golfers reach the region - most golf clubs are within 20-60 minutes of arrivals.

Distance to the Algarve
Inside the Algarve

Faro Airport sits inside the Algarve itself, a few minutes from Faro city and roughly 20-45 minutes from most of the region's golf clubs.

  • Car rental available at the airport
  • Taxis and pre-booked private transfers available
  • Bus and rail connections available; a rental car or transfer is usually more practical for golf luggage

LIS

Lisbon to the Algarve

Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) has the widest long-haul network in Portugal. It makes sense when a direct Faro flight isn't available, when a trip is combining Lisbon sightseeing with golf, or when connection times/fares favour Lisbon.

Distance to the Algarve
278 km
Approx. driving time
~3h

Via the A2 and A22 (Via do Infante) motorways, roughly 2h45-3h with normal traffic. Both are tolled electronically (Via Verde/plate billing) - a rental car needs a toll transponder or plate registered for tolls before driving this route.

SVQ

Seville to the Algarve

Seville Airport (SVQ), just across the Spanish border, is a practical alternative for golfers staying in Eastern Algarve (Tavira, Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Castro Marim) when it offers a better fare or schedule than Faro.

Distance to the Algarve
211 km
Approx. driving time
~3h

Via the A-49 (Spain) and A22 (Portugal), crossing the Guadiana river border near Vila Real de Santo Antonio - roughly 2h30-2h45. Useful mainly for guests staying in Eastern Algarve. Remember the 1-hour time difference between Spain and Portugal, and that a cross-border rental car needs the agency's written permission.

Direct Flights to the Algarve

Airline schedules and seasonal routes change frequently and we don't want to publish a route list that goes stale the moment an airline adjusts its winter timetable. Direct flights to Faro operate from many UK, Irish and mainland European cities, are heavier in the April-October season, and vary year to year - check a flight search engine or your airline directly for the current timetable before booking.

Direct flights may be seasonal. Check the airline before booking.

Algarve Golf Regions

Algarve Central Region

Show all regions

The Algarve's golf clubs spread across three informal regions. None is objectively "better" - they differ in scenery, distance from Faro Airport, and the towns nearby.

Central Algarve

Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Albufeira - the region's highest concentration of golf, resort infrastructure, and the shortest drive from Faro Airport.

  • 16 golf clubs
  • 28 courses
  • 9 golf shops

Getting Around

Getting Around the Algarve

Most golfers combine a rental car with the occasional private transfer. Here's what to know about each option.

Rental car

The most flexible option for a golf trip - carrying clubs, moving between courses, and reaching restaurants or beaches on your own schedule. Book one with room for golf bags, confirm the car has a toll transponder or a plate registered for electronic tolls (Via Verde), and note Portugal drives on the right. Airport parking and rental desks are inside Faro Airport's arrivals area.

Private transfers

A pre-booked private transfer covers airport-to-hotel, airport-to-golf-club, hotel-to-golf-club and group journeys without needing a rental car, and most operators can accommodate golf bags - confirm this when booking. Useful for groups who don't want to split into rental cars, or golfers who'd rather not drive after a round.

Taxi / ride services

Taxis are available at the airport and in every golf town, and are a reasonable option for short, one-off journeys. Availability of app-based ride services varies by town and time of day - a golfer with clubs to move is usually better served by a taxi or a pre-booked transfer than waiting on an app pickup.

Public transport

Trains and buses connect the Algarve's main towns and can work well for sightseeing without a car. For a golf trip specifically - clubs, bags, and courses that are often outside town centres - a rental car or private transfer is almost always more practical.

When to Visit

When to Visit

There is no single "best" month - each season trades off weather, price and how busy the courses are.

September - October

Busy season begins

Warm sea and reliably sunny golfing weather as the summer heat fades. Autumn is the start of the Algarve's busiest golf season, so popular courses and tee times book up early.

November - February

Busiest for golf

The height of the winter-sun golf season, when golfers from northern Europe fill the courses. Daytime temperatures stay mild and well suited to golf even if evenings are cool; shorter days mean fewer holes per day, and occasional rain is more likely than in summer.

March - May

Shoulder season

Spring brings lengthening days, wildflowers and pleasant golfing temperatures before the summer heat. Tee times are usually easier to get than in the busy autumn-to-winter season.

June - August

Quietest for golf

The warmest, driest months and peak beach-tourism season, which means higher accommodation prices. On the golf courses it is the quietest time of year; many golfers book early tee times to avoid the midday heat.

Beyond Golf

What Else Can You Do in the Algarve?

Beaches, coastal walks, boat trips, historic towns and more - the Algarve rewards time outside the round too. Explore each region's own destination guide for the full picture.

Language
Portuguese. English is widely spoken in golf clubs, hotels and restaurants across the Algarve.
Time zone
Western European Time (WET/WEST) - the same zone as the UK, one hour behind Spain including Seville.
Driving side
Right-hand side of the road.
Toll roads
The A22 (Via do Infante) and A2 use electronic tolling (Via Verde) - a rental car needs a transponder or registered plate before driving them.
Electrical plugs
Type C/F, 230V - the same as mainland Europe.
Tipping
Not obligatory. Rounding up or leaving 5-10% for good restaurant service is appreciated but not expected.
Golf dress codes
Collared shirts and tailored/golf shorts or trousers are standard at most Algarve clubs; soft spikes only. Check the specific club's dress code before booking.
Transporting golf equipment
Most airlines carry golf bags as sports equipment for a fee - check your airline's specific golf-bag policy before flying, as allowances vary.
Booking lead times
Popular clubs can book out weeks ahead in the busy autumn-to-winter season - reserve tee times as early as your plans allow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to the questions golfers ask most before booking an Algarve trip.

How do I get to the Algarve?

Almost all golfers fly into Faro Airport (FAO), which sits inside the Algarve itself. Lisbon and Seville airports are practical alternatives when a Faro flight or fare doesn't work, both reachable by a roughly 2.5-3 hour drive.

Which airport is closest to Algarve golf courses?

Faro Airport. It's inside the region, and most published golf clubs are within roughly 20-60 minutes of it - see the "Golf Courses Near Faro Airport" list above for real, distance-ranked figures.

How far is Faro Airport from the golf courses?

It varies by club - Central Algarve clubs near Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago are typically the closest, while Western and far Eastern Algarve clubs are further. Check the ranked list above for each club's actual computed distance.

Can I fly directly to Faro?

Yes, from many UK, Irish and mainland European cities, especially during the April-October season. Availability and frequency change by airline and season, so check a flight search engine or the airline directly before booking - see the note in the Flights section above.

How far is Lisbon from the Algarve?

About 278 km, roughly a 2h45-3h drive via the A2 and A22 motorways (both tolled).

Can I drive from Lisbon to the Algarve?

Yes - the A2 south to the A22 (Via do Infante) is a direct, well-signed motorway route, typically just under 3 hours. Both motorways use electronic tolling, so a rental car needs a toll transponder or registered plate.

Can I drive from Seville to the Algarve?

Yes - roughly 211 km and 2h30-2h45 via the A-49 in Spain and the A22 in Portugal, crossing the border near Vila Real de Santo Antonio. Confirm your rental agency allows cross-border travel, and note the 1-hour time difference between Spain and Portugal.

What is the closest airport to Vilamoura?

Faro Airport - Vilamoura sits in Central Algarve, one of the shortest drives from Faro of any Algarve golf destination.

What is the closest airport to Quinta do Lago?

Faro Airport - Quinta do Lago, like Vilamoura, is in Central Algarve and among the closest golf destinations to the airport.

What currency is used in Portugal?

The Euro (EUR, €). Cards and contactless payment are widely accepted at golf clubs, hotels and restaurants.

What is the weather like for golf in Algarve?

Mild winters, warm dry summers, and sunshine on most days year-round - see the live current conditions, 7-day forecast, and monthly climate averages above for specifics.

When is the best time to play golf in Algarve?

There's no single best month. Autumn and winter (September-February) are the busiest golf season, when demand for tee times peaks; spring (March-May) is a popular, usually easier-to-book alternative; summer (June-August) is the hottest time and the quietest on the courses, though it is peak beach season. See the "When to Visit" section above for the full trade-offs.

How much does an Algarve golf trip cost?

This depends heavily on season, accommodation choice, and how many rounds you play, and we don't want to publish a number that misleads on either side - green fees, hotel rates and flight prices all move independently. Check current green fees directly with each club's Contact & Booking details, and current accommodation/flight prices with those providers.

Where should golfers stay in Algarve?

It depends on which region's courses you want closest: Central Algarve (Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Albufeira) has the highest concentration of golf and the shortest airport drive; Western Algarve suits a quieter, scenic trip; Eastern Algarve suits a Seville arrival or a quieter, lower-key stay. See the regional breakdown above and each municipality's own destination guide.

Do I need a rental car for an Algarve golf trip?

Most golfers find a rental car the most practical option for moving between courses, hotels and restaurants with clubs. Private transfers cover specific journeys well without one. Public transport is workable for general sightseeing but is rarely the practical choice with golf bags.

What can non-golfers do in Algarve?

Beaches, coastal walks, boat trips to sea caves, historic old towns, wine and food, and spas, all within easy reach of the golf regions - see "Travelling with Someone Who Doesn't Play Golf?" above and each region's own destination guide.
